Should I go to the emergency room or call Ocean Dentistry Co. for tooth pain?
There are very, very rare dental infections and circumstances that would require the patient to go to the ER, but almost every single time they should see a dentist first. Almost every problem can be managed in the dental chair without having to go to the emergency room to be treated.
Emergency room dental pain is typically caused by infections that are extremely large or obstructed airways or anything like that, that would just require more urgent medical or more serious intervention than what we could do in the office. But almost every single dental emergency can be handled in our practice, and I would encourage every patient to call the dental office first before going to the ER.
The reality is that ER doctors can help manage your symptoms temporarily, but they can’t provide the definitive dental treatment you need. You’ll end up needing to see a dentist anyway, so calling us first saves you time, money, and unnecessary stress.
What emergency dental services do you provide at Ocean Dentistry Co.?
Most commonly, the emergency dental services that we provide patients or that they’re coming in to us for are related to pain and some sort of issue they’re having that causes them to call a dentist. It could be ranging anywhere from a toothache to jaw soreness or gum soreness. All of those would constitute something that a patient would have discomfort or pain for, and they would call us to come and see them for that.
The most common dental emergencies that we see patients in the office for are tooth pain. Typically, it’s caused by bacteria in the mouth, but the question is what’s the source of the pain and whether the nerve is involved.
Sometimes an emergency for a patient is a chipped tooth that may not be accompanied by pain, but aesthetically, it’s an emergency because they don’t want to walk around without a front tooth.
So that could also be an emergency that is a reason for them to call. Most of the time it’s pain, it’s tooth pain, but we do have some gum pain and jaw pain that does constitute an emergency, though they’re not as common as the tooth pain that’s causing patients to give us a call.
Can you really see me the same day if I’m in such pain?
Yes, we do have same-day emergency appointments available. When you call with an emergency, we’ll work to get you in that same day. We can definitely see the patient same day and hopefully even treat them the same day. That really depends on the extent of the problem and having the time in the schedule, but most of that can be handled in-house that day.
We understand that when you’re in pain, every hour feels like an eternity. That’s why we’ve structured our practice to accommodate dental emergencies quickly. What if I’m terrified of the dentist but I’m in terrible pain?
We have a lot of different things that we can offer for patients who are scared of the dentist. We do have sedation, different sedation options from nitrous oxide to oral sedation to conscious sedation. We have multiple ways to help you feel comfortable during treatment.
But my recommendation would be if somebody is in pain, the pain is not going to go away. It’s only going to get worse. Seeing the dentist, it may be a simple fix, or it may be something that is not as bad as we perceive it to be. And that could just help alleviate the pain and really relieve a lot of the pain and stress that accompanies dental problems.
I would always recommend if someone’s in pain, at least call the dentist and try to get in so that we can at least diagnose and come up with a treatment plan. Research shows that dental anxiety often creates more suffering than the actual dental treatment itself. Many patients tell us the fear was worse than the actual experience, and the relief they felt afterward made them wish they’d called sooner.
